Clio Calvi, Luisa delle Piane, Antonia Jannone, Lilia Laghi, Rossana Orlandi, Lella Valtorta, Nina Yashar: a Milano, sette galleriste, tutte donne.

Clio Calvi, Luisa delle Piane, Antonia Jannone, Lilia Laghi, Rossana Orlandi, Lella Valtorta, Nina Yashar: seven Milanese gallery owners, seven visionary women, seven passionali who have dedicated their life to design, collectively shaping the Italian scene over the last 40 years. The seismic shift in taste they represent — a return to humanism in which design is a product of the intellect, rather than merely a question of style — originally had its nerve center in the Brera district of Milan, where many of these women located their galleries, near to the many young design studios that had set up shop there: Alchimia, Branzi, Castelli, De Lucchi, and of course Sottsass and later Memphis. Never afraid of taking risks, these seven gallerists often promoted work that at the time seemed incomprehensible, but which subsequently proved invaluable to the evolution of design criticism, becoming known the world over thanks to its publication in the pages of Domus and Modo.

Today these seven women are regarded as the grandes dames of Milanese design, renowned and admired for their patronage of design culture. But while they hold the key to many a 20th-century master’s legacy and archive, they have all maintained their youthful curiosity and spark — just ask the many young designers whose careers they now nourish and promote. For PIN–UP photographer Delfino Sisot Legnani was lucky enough to be allowed to photograph the seven gallerists backstage, in their storerooms, where both the history and the future of design lie wrapped in an expectative hush.
